ADAPTIVE THERAPY FOR DIVERGENT MINDS AND BODIES
Therapy that adapts to YOU, not the other way around
Why traditional therapy “doesn’t work” for everyone
Most new clients tell me I’m the third, fourth, or fifth therapist they’ve worked with. By the time they find me, most are burnt out on therapy-as-usual. They’re tired of being lectured for lateness and cancellations, of being asked to sit still, to try harder, or to be someone they’re not. Many have almost given up, thinking they’re too lazy or broken to ever feel whole again.
But you’re NOT lazy, broken, or wrong. You may be overwhelmed, burnt out, and running software and/or hardware that wasn’t even built for this century, but that’s not your fault, and you shouldn’t have to work twice as hard just to access basic mental health care. You don’t need to be “fixed,” you just need a better fit.
Adaptive therapy
So what if therapy adapted to your needs, instead of you adapting to your therapist? What if having an unusual brain or body wasn’t a liability, or a barrier to care? Here at NPC, there’s no need to “perform normalcy” or to play the role of a “good client.” Come as you are, and we’ll collaboratively adapt your therapy to fit your needs.
So what does adaptive therapy actually look like? Of course that depends on your specific needs, but it might include…
Playing a low-bandwidth video game during sessions to stay regulated or focused
Showing up late to every single session… without any punitive “consequences” (your lateness isn’t a problem for me unless it’s one of your treatment goals!)
Skipping sessions… without the guilt trip or lecture
Stimming, moving around, or lying down, camera on or off
Talking, typing, or switching back and forth
Keeping your camera off or angled away (to share body language without freebasing eye-contact)
Info dumping about special interests, or integrating them into your treatment
D&D-based peer support groups
For those who are tired of therapy, who want to try a different approach, or who are looking for social connection and support, I also offer D&D-based Peer Support Groups for folks with chronic energy issues (e.g. AuDHD, chronic illnesses, burnout, insomnia). About half of my support group members are neurodivergent (like me), and most live with one or more chronic illnesses (also like me). Future groups may focus on neurodivergence exclusively, or other topics requested by applicants.
These groups are slow-paced and beginner-friendly, so no experience with D&D or TTRPGs is necessary, and they include cognitive accommodations/adaptations like detailed written summaries and references, simplified rules, and automated math. Potential members are screened to weed out alpha males and conflict-seekers, and safety is a top priority.
There are no commitments required to join, though members can book ahead to reserve their seat if desired! Folks who can’t afford the standard fee can play for free via the drop-in list whenever there are openings, or can apply for a 3-6 month reduced fee slot (no income documentation needed.)
